Tours
From one campanile to another

If you would like to visit sacral sites on Krk, it would be good to start from the cathedral. The entire complex consists of several church objects, the church of St Kvirin, St Margaret and the cathedral of St Mary. Masses are still held in the last two churches, while St Kvirin is used as an exhibition room.

Then you go down the Roman cardo, the main street which leads from the southernmost point of the old city centre towards the north gate Porta Su, where you will find the Glagolitics Square. The square has just recently been modernized, but it is still enclosed by medieval structures of monastic brotherhoods, the Franciscans, the Benedictine nuns, and today the almost vanished area where the Poor Clares and the Benedictine monks used to dwell, bound to the church of St Michael (today the Lady of Health).

If you have looked at the cathedral carefully, including the temples of the brotherhoods, and you are still not completely tired, we recommend you to take a short trip to the Krk quay and the breakwater, to the camp Ježevac. There, at the highest glade, you will see the remains of the church of St Mary of the Spring. This is where, according to the legend, the order of St Francis of Assisi was founded on Krk and it is possible that another bell tower was situated there, which used to sound the alarm in case of any incoming danger from the sea.

Following the Roman Footsteps

Krk used to be a Roman city, but today the elements of antiquity can be seen only in traces. The Romans set the foundations, that is, a regular screen of streets made of parallel and vertical streets in relation to the two main streets, cardo and decumanus. These streets connect the northernmost and the southernmost point, as well as the westernmost and the easternmost point of the city.

Therefore, you should take a tour from the western city wall, by entering through the gate Porta Pizana, by way of the main city street, the decumanus. The view of the city has changed a lot to this day, so you should not be surprised by the Renaissance, Baroque and a few modern structures which you will find along the way, including among other things, the only preserved chapel within the city walls dedicated to St Joseph. Then you will arrive to the Platea Antiqua, the Roman city square, the junction of main streets from which the ancient Romans designed the shape of the city centre. You should turn towards the cathedral, which before Christianisation contained the city thermae.

Now it is time to take a break, and continue south, towards the city quay. Immediately before the gate Mala Vrata, you will see the store Templum Veneris. Besides the sports goods, take a look at the floor, where you can still see the remains of the former Temple of Venus, which was situated at the same site.

Take a walk along the temple into the first street to the right and enter into the tavern Mate. Besides a good plum brandy, you can see the remains of a Roman mosaic with the preserved image of Triton, a charavchter from roman mithology, son of the god Poseidon and Amphitrite. Continue down the street to the main city square and enter into the cafe Volsonis, whose basement contains the foundations of a late antique wall with a tower, and this is where our Roman trip ends.

On the Krk city walls

You should start slowly, with the first point of your tour being the morning coffee on the Krk quay in the café Kula. You are at the western part of the Krk city walls, along the polygonal tower from the 15th century. After taking a look at the quay and seeing the departure of couple of ships, you should go north and immediately after the bend, enter through a small door into the café Volsonis. Pass within the walls through the ground floor of the café to see the remains of the Roman past - the foundations of a late antique wall with a tower.

Leave through the northern entrance and take a walk through the market Vela Placa (Great Market), the main city square enclosed by a tower from the 17th century and other profane architecture from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. Then take the main street decumanus to the Platea Antiqua, a square which was the starting point for planning the main city streets in the Roman era of cardo and decumanus. Go down the street towards the cathedral and to the Castle situated at the square Kamplin.

Now it is time for a little effort, take a walk on the walls of the Castle, once the most important point of the city defence. The castle is also called the Frankopan castle, after a noble family which marked the history of Krk, as they used to rule in this area for a few centuries.
